Genetic information is stored in DNA using four different chemicals called adenine, cytosine, guanine and thymine. For example, human DNA contains about three billion. At the highest level, genetic engineering can be sub-divided into the creation of genetically modified (GM) plants, animals and micro-organisms, as well as the application of genetic engineering in healthcare, otherwise known as genetic medicine. Here, some tobacco plants were transgenically altered with a gene from a firefly to make them bioluminescent. Created by Calgene, this was licensed for human consumption in 1994. Specifically, Calgene used &#8220;gene silencing&#8221; technology to shut down the gene that causes tomatoes to rot, so allowing the GM produce to stay firm for longer after harvest.<br \/>\n\u7531Calgene\u516c\u53f8\u6240\u521b\u9020\u7684\u201cFLAVR SAVR\u201d\u756a\u8304\u662f\u9996\u4e2a\u88ab\u5546\u4e1a\u5316\u7684\u8f6c\u57fa\u56e0\u690d\u7269\u30021994\u5e74\uff0c\u201cFLAVR SAVR\u201d\u756a\u8304\u83b7\u5f97\u8bb8\u53ef\uff0c\u5141\u8bb8\u88ab\u4eba\u7c7b\u98df\u7528\u3002\u786e\u5207\u7684\u8bf4\uff0cCalgene\u516c\u53f8\u901a\u8fc7\u5229\u7528\u201c\u57fa\u56e0\u6c89\u9ed8\u201d\u6280\u672f\uff0c\u5173\u95ed\u4e86\u5bfc\u81f4\u756a\u8304\u8150\u70c2\u7684\u57fa\u56e0\uff0c\u56e0\u6b64\u53ef\u4ee5\u4f7f\u756a\u8304\u5728\u91c7\u6458\u540e\u62e5\u6709\u66f4\u957f\u7684\u4fdd\u9c9c\u671f\u3002<\/p>\n<p>GM Animals<br \/>\n\u8f6c\u57fa\u56e0\u52a8\u7269<\/p>\n<p>Transgenic animals have also already been created. Way back in 1986 the first transgenic mice were genetically altered to develop cancer. Since that time the creation of &#8220;humanised&#8221; transgenic mice and rats for research purposes has also almost become routine.<br \/>\n\u8f6c\u57fa\u56e0\u52a8\u7269\u4e5f\u5df2\u7ecf\u95ee\u4e16\u3002\u65e9\u57281986\u5e74\uff0c\u7b2c\u4e00\u6279\u63a5\u53d7\u8f6c\u57fa\u56e0\u7684\u8001\u9f20\u7684\u57fa\u56e0\u53d1\u751f\u6539\u53d8\u5e76\u56e0\u6b64\u800c\u60a3\u4e0a\u764c\u75c7\u3002\u4ece\u90a3\u65f6\u8d77\uff0c\u57f9\u80b2\u201c\u5177\u6709\u4eba\u7c7b\u7279\u6027\u201d\u7684\u8f6c\u57fa\u56e0\u5c0f\u9f20\u548c\u5927\u9f20\u4ee5\u7528\u4e8e\u7814\u7a76\u51e0\u4e4e\u5df2\u7ecf\u6210\u4e3a\u60ef\u4f8b\u3002<\/p>\n<p>A new breed of &#8220;enviropig&#8221; has also now been transgenically created by the Guelph Transgenic Pig Research Program to produce a more environmentally-friendly form of manure. Back in 1996, the Roslin Institute in Scotland also successfully managed to clone a sheep called &#8220;Dolly&#8221; by transplanting an udder cell nucleus from one sheep into an empty egg cell from another. Created by a company called Aqua Bounty Technologies, the AquAdvantage is a transgenic salmon that has had ocean pout and chinook salmon genes spliced into its DNA. While progress has been slower than the media anticipated &#8212; and the role of most of the genes in human DNA is far from understood &#8212; already more than 1,000 human genetic tests are available. For example the International Cancer Genome Consortium has been set up to generate genetic data on up to fifty of the most common types of cancer. In time, this work should allow doctors to test for and diagnose cancers based on their genetic characteristics.
